Image Licensing:
- One-time rights:
Photos from this category are leased for a one time use; for instance, a one-time printing of a brochure.
- First rights:
This is directed to the limited amount of stock photography we have and is for the privilege of being the first to use the image; the image may only be used once, such as described under "One time rights".
- Serial Rights:
This is the right to use the image in a periodical. This is purchased in order to prevent the image from running in a competing publication.
- Exclusive Rights:
Exclusive rights secure the image from being used in the same market as the photo buyer's market, but allows us to sell the photo to other markets; if you were a billboard maker, then we couldn't sell the image in question to another billboard maker, but we could sell it to a magazine.
- Electronic Rights:
This allows the buyer to place the image onto a website, or CD-ROM.
- Promotion Rights:
These rights allow a publisher to use the image for the promotion of a publication in which the photo appears, such as in a direct mail campaign, these rights are purchased in addition to First Rights to reproduce the image.
- Buyout Rights:
This is the most common rights package since we deal mainly in assignment photography; it provides the client with the full rights [First rights, serial rights, exclusive rights, electronic rights, promotion rights] to the image, for an unlimited amount of time, where we surrender any claims to royalties or other future compensation, and we cannot resell the image to another client.
- All Rights:
Another popular rights package that allows full rights [First rights, serial rights, exclusive rights, electronic rights, promotion rights] for a specific period of time, usually 1 to 2-years. During this time period, we are restricted from selling the photo to another client.
